1.) Wild: This designation is given to stock what was directly collected from the wild. While it is the goal of most of the people in the hobby to eliminate the need for further collection from the wild, sometimes hobby stocks require new genetic input in order to stave off the effects on inbreeding. Collecting wild fish of known species is one way to add wild genes and variability back into aquarium strains and is commonly done by responsible breeders when increased undesirable abnormalities are detected in fry.
2.) F1: First Filial. Originally coined by Gregor Mendel in his famous pea plant studies into genetic inheritance. In the hobby this designation is given to organisms whose parental stock came directly from the wild. This is considered to be great stock to acquire and highly desireable because it has a very large degree of genetic variability found with one half represented by a parent of aquarium strain and one half of the genes coming from the wild origin.
3.) F2: Second Filial. Originally coined by Gregor Mendel in his famous pea plant studies into genetic inheritance. In the hobby this designation is given to organisms whose parental stock are twice removed from the wild. This is considered to be great stock to acquire and highly desirable because it has a very large degree of genetic variability found within the organism with one quarter of its genes coming from the wild origin and three fourths coming from aquarium strain.
4.) “Collection Location”. An example of this is Xiphophorus montezumae “Ojo Caliente”. In this example the genus and the species comes first letting the hobbyist known the scientific designation of the organism in question. However sometimes within a species where that organism is collected from can greatly affect its traits. This is the case here. This is also the reason many hobbyists try to keep collection data locations as pure lines as well. This way the traits that made that particular location stand out are not lost and the species from that location can be readily identified.
